NC Special Forces soldier dies trying to save kids

3 die in NC house fire as Special Forces soldier re-enters building but fails to save children By The Associated Press

HOPE MILLS, N.C. (AP) ' A Special Forces soldier and his two daughters died early Tuesday after he tried to rescue them from his burning home near Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

The adults managed to escape the burning home by jumping from second-floor bedrooms, but the father wrapped himself in a blanket and went back in for his young daughters, Cumberland County Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said.

The girls' mother told arriving firefighters the soldier re-entered the home in Hope Mills, about 10 miles from the Army base that is home to the Green Berets and other Special Forces units.

"She told us her husband had gone back inside to get their two daughters," Tanna said. "He never made it back out."

Tanna said the man was a Special Forces soldier, and his daughters were ages 4 and 6.

The victims' names were not immediately released. The surviving mother was being treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Tanna said.

The century-old home's timbers were likely very dry, causing a fast-moving and very hot blaze that kept firefighters outside hours after extinguishing the 2 a.m. fire, Tanna said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
