NBC Universal Installs BitCentrals PrécisRedefines workflow paradigm with End-to-End Play-to-Air system (April 27, 2005)
BitCentral, Inc., a leading provider of video content management and distribution solutions, recently announced that NBC Universal has contracted the company to install its Précis End-to-End Play-to-Air system into six of the networks Owned and Operated (O&O) stations.
The BitCentral Précis solution gives broadcast stations the ability to immediately upgrade to a file based news workflow from ingest to air by providing the stations news team with the best tools possible to quickly deliver high quality news to its marketplace. Précis is an integrated solution ingesting multiple analog NTSC sources (such as Microwave feeds) or SDI sources into the stations digital workflow and allows the news team to gather, edit and file stories remotely. Précis also adds end-to-end, redundant digital news management solutions with non-proprietary storage and archiving capability.
The decision to install BitCentrals Précis solution was an easy choice for NBC since BitCentrals MediaPipe news management and distribution system has been working at NBC NewsChannel for the dissemination of national news to the NBC Affiliate stations. ?Were very happy to expand our relationship with NBC in helping their O&Os to seamlessly integrate their local news into the national news interface. Our Précis solution doesnt just digitize the current workflow, but brings to the station a more efficient workflow process that saves the station time as well as generating better quality video, said Fred Fourcher, CEO for BitCentral. ?Since national stories come into the station through our system no other company can integrate local and national news as efficiently as we can.
?Were pleased that BitCentral is able to offer us a complete end-to-end workflow solution, concurred Doug Thurlow, Director of News Technology for NBC O&Os. ?We were equally impressed by its ease of installation and its ease of use. At our first installation in Phoenix, the hardware was delivered on Monday and we started going to air on Tuesday. Apsara Sivamurthy, Manager of News Technology for NBC O&Os, states, ?The revised workflow process seemed natural and efficient, eliminating many unneeded steps that were a legacy from antiquated analog tape based systems.
According to BitCentral, tape based stations spend on average between 30 to 90 minutes to prepare a clip for air, which includes a significant amount of time ?sneaker netting around the station, due to the lack of a networked environment. In contrast, Précis is a computer based solution using a file based system so raw footage can be ingested and edited in the field and the finished clip sent to the station over microwave or even over the internet. ?Even if the clip is walked in the door on tape, it can be edited and ready to air in 3 to 5 minutes, continued Fourcher, ?dramatically reducing the time to air, while offering a significant competitive market advantage.
?Another reason why we chose BitCentrals Précis solution is that it contributes a strong cost/benefit to our bottom line, added Katie Curtis, CIO of NBCs Television Station Division. ?Also, the system is designed in a way that news sharing between our group stations is a simple plug-in. With all our station news departments tied together we become a much more efficient organization.
?Our Précis End-to-End Play-to-Air system is designed to help change the production workflow paradigm that has plagued the broadcast industry for some time, concluded Fourcher. ?The Précis system moves the station to a new workflow model that provides their producers more control over their stories, thus giving them the ability to create higher quality segments while greatly increasing the speed-to-air time and improving productivity.
