NAB 2007 Hot Product: Red Giants Magic Bullet
As I made my way to the NAB 2007 ?Plug in Pavilion I saw a huge crowd forming around the Red Giant Software booth. I have been a Red Giant Software product user for years. They are one of my favorite companies. As I got closer to the booth I saw one of the reasons for the crowd. Stu Maschwitz, effects guru and co-founder of The Orphanage was there holding court. Maschwitz is the original developer and brains behind Magic Bullet. At the Pavilion, he demod the new Magic Bullet for 2007.
When I used Magic Bullet on my first film, Death Clique, I immediately made the plug-in a permanent part of my toolbox. It was able to add the look and feel of a high dollar feature film to my MiniDV horror. And the best part? It was extremely easy to use.
Maschwitz was looking for a solution to make digital video content look more filmic. Since he couldnt find what he needed from the solutions on the market, he created his own.
?For thousands of years, mankind has sat around campfires and told stories, and there are those who suggest that this association with narrative and the flickering image is so deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness that it in part explains our love for movies. Whether this is true or not, applying Magic Bullet to your video instantly transforms it from just another bit of DV camcorder footage to something more, says Maschwitz.
Want to make your footage more eerie? Why not add some ?Arctic Tundra to it. Loved the film Three Kings? Theres a preset for that too. There is an arsenal of 100 presets in the library at your disposal and all are highly customizable.
The buzz is Magic Bullet 3 will now come in four flavors: Magic Bullet Looks (an entirely new stand alone application AND plug in), Magic Bullet Frame (an extremely fast, high quality conversion tool for 60i materials into 24p), Magic Bullet Colorista (a tremendous next generation color correcting tool), and the Magic Bullet Suite 2007 which includes all three and Instant HD (a tremendous tool to up-rez footage).
Magic Bullet will work with Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Apple Motion, and Avid.
The last version of Magic Bullet was a huge upgrade from the previous one and the folks at Red Giant were right: I was completely blown away with this one. I have used Red Giant products for years and I can say this: They have outstanding support for their products. I have never had one problem that they couldnt fix with a simple email.
When I showed distributors my movie, the one comment they all had in common was ?Wow this looks like film. Thanks to Magic Bullet, it was film for all they know. Any tool that enhances production value is a keeper and I eagerly await Magic Bullet 2007 with open arms and pocketbook. It will be available in the Summer 2007. Magic Bullet Looks will run $399.
