Motorola and Modulus to Offer SD/HD MPEG-4 Encoding

To provide HD and SD MPEG-4 AVC encoder and decoder products (April 14, 2005)

Motorola and Modulus Video, Inc. today announced that the companies will work together to provide high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) MPEG-4 Advanced Video Codec (AVC) encoder and decoder products to cable, satellite, and telecom providers globally.

Motorola will resell the award-winning line of Modulus MPEG-4 products, including the ME1000 AVC SD Video Encoder, MD1000 AVC SD Professional Decoder, and the recently announced ME6000 AVC HD Video Encoder. The companies will also work to develop a line of Motorola-branded MPEG-4 AVC encoders, powered by Modulus technology. Motorola will integrate these products into its digital video head-end, and offer the systems as part of its solutions for IPTV through its worldwide sales channels.

“There is tremendous worldwide interest in using the high quality and bandwidth-saving benefits of MPEG-4 AVC video distribution systems to meet growing demand for new digital broadcast services,” said Bob Wilson, Chairman and CEO of Modulus Video. “The Motorola and Modulus Video development teams include many of the world’s most respected experts on compression and video distribution. We have brought the expertise of our two organizations together in order to deliver a more powerful and cost effective solution to the marketplace. Motorola’s vast systems integration experience and unique position on the consumer side of the digital video distribution chain now can provide a ready source of end-to-end AVC solutions that extend from the drawing board through deployment and from the head-end to the consumer.”

“MPEG-4 AVC is gaining momentum as the encoding technology of choice for new SD and HD IPTV services” said Doug Means, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola digital media solutions. “Motorola is driving the transition to all digital video distribution across a wide breadth of markets. By teaming with Modulus Video we are building on our promise to offer our customers the right technology to match their near term and long range network deployment and business plans.”

The companies will demonstrate their solutions at the National Association of Broadcasters convention, Booth SU 9636 (Modulus Video) and Booth SU 7133 (Motorola), April 18-21, in Las Vegas.
