Motorola and Magis to Accelerate Adoption of 5 GHz BroadbandThe Two Companies Sign Technical Services Agreement (January 14, 2002)
Motorola will provide Magis with technical support services, including the alignment of Magis' technology roadmaps and feature set direction, and the enabling of interoperability between Motorola equipment and Magis' Air5-based products. The two companies will participate in co-marketing activities at industry events, as well as advertising and product promotion to customers. In addition, Motorola has made an investment in Magis to help fund the continued development of its chipsets, which enable wireless communications of TCP/IP data, high-quality video, and audio, throughout the home and office.
"Magis has met the challenge of extending digital TV and HDTV broadband services beyond the coaxial cable and throughout the home using wireless networking," said Carl McGrath, Motorola Broadband vice president and general manager, digital consumer gateways. "Magis 5 GHz wireless will provide a path to empower set-tops with the networking capabilities required to support next-generation digital services and applications."
"This is a milestone event in home networking history," said media analyst Paul Kagan, a Magis investor. "TVs and set-tops, PCs and modems, audio and other electronic devices in over 100 million homes worldwide could be connected through cable system deployment, and the 5 GHz band is a vital link to that gateway."
"Motorola's strategic alliance with Magis to support our Air5 technology represents a great stride into the global marketplace for Magis," said Clarence Bruckner, president and CEO, Magis Networks, Inc. "By working together, Magis and Motorola can deliver a significant innovation -- ubiquitous access to broadband cable services throughout the home over wireless 5 GHz networks."
About Magis' Air5 Technology
The foundation of Magis' Air5 technology encompasses IEEE 802.11a, HiperLAN2, and Wireless 1394 standards. Leveraging the advantages of the 5 GHz frequency band and Magis' advanced RF design techniques, this technology enables Magis' chipsets to exceed the performance, coverage, and range of other 802.11a and 802.11b products. This advanced design also achieves a high level of integration, thereby significantly reducing build costs to manufacturers and enabling them to quickly bring 5GHz wireless networking products to market.
Applications for Magis chipsets include digital cable set-tops and gateways, cable modems, PCs, laptops, PDAs, and satellite receivers, and consumer electronics equipment such as televisions, personal video recorders (PVRs), DVDs, Internet appliances, and gaming consoles.
