Motionbuilder 4 Coming to Mac OS X

FiLMBOX replacement adds new tools, performance improvements By Dave Nagel
Kaydara says it will release version 4.0 of Motionbuilder this summer. Motionbuilder is a real-time 3D character animation package formerly known as FiLMBOX animation. The new version, due out in August, will support Mac OS X, as well as Windows and Linux.

Motionbuilder 4.0 is specifically designed for professional 3D character animation and enhances several of the previous tools found in FiLMBOX and introduces several others. Motionbuilder 4, according to Kaydara, will offer performance improvements and will include a redesigned drag and drop user interface. New features will include:

  • Automatic character rigging.
  • Motion retargeting, which allows animators to use motion data in one animation environment.
  • Lip-sync/facial animation for real-time lip synching.
  • .
  • Drag-and-drop contextual interface: When objects or elements are selected, the tools and properties for that object or element become instantly available in the interface.

Motionbuilder 4.0 natively supports Kaydara's FBX file interchange format, a format for 3D data that allows Motionbuilder users to acquire and exchange 3D assets and media from a wide variety of sources. FBX is supported by Alias|Wavefront, Autodesk, NewTek, Vicon and others.

Kaydara Motionbuilder 4.0 will be available in August 2002 at a base price of $3,495. It will run on Mac OS X, Windows NT/2000 and Red Hat Linux. For more information, visit
