More tiny, but harmful, frogs showing up in HawaiiMore tiny coqui frogs showing up in Hawaii, creating menace as population explodes
HONOLULU (AP) ' Hawaii officials say more tiny coqui frogs have been hitching rides on boats and planes from the Big Island to Oahu, raising the risk that the harmful invasive species could become established on the island that's home to Honolulu, Waikiki, and most of the state's human population.
There have been more reports of coqui frogs on Oahu in 2011 than the seven prior years combined.
Coqui frogs and their distinctive mating calls are so beloved in Puerto Rico that people have written poems about them.
But in Hawaii, the coin-sized frogs are a feared menace.
There aren't any natural predators for them to fight off in Hawaii, so they've spread quickly through forests and yards near Hilo since they were accidentally introduced to the Big Island in the 1990s.
