More Stations Pick Ignite Integrated Production Systems

New innovative solution from Grass Valley improves productivity and reduces on-screen errors (September 12, 2005)

Thomson today announced that it recently delivered its Grass Valley brand Ignite integrated production systems to ABC-owned California television stations KABC-TV, Los Angeles and KGO-TV, San Francisco, as well as Meredith Broadcastings WSHM-TV, in Springfield, Mass.

Due to its ability to streamline operations, reduce technical errors, and improve their on-air quality, more than 15 other U.S.-based television broadcast groups have expressed strong interest in deploying the Grass Valley Ignite system across their stations. A major factor in this trend is the recent transition and utilization of the Grass Valley digital video switchers production and routing and distribution capabilities at the heart of the Ignite product line.

?The Grass Valley Ignite system is helping a wide range of broadcasters cost-effectively improve their operations and get more content on the air, said Marc Valentin, president of the Grass Valley business within Thomson. ?The use of high-quality integrated production systems, complete with proven broadcast production and distribution equipment such as the KayakDD switcher is a trend we see continuing.

Improving productivity
The Ignite line is the first and most complete link between the control room and newsroom. This combined hardware and software environment lets stations produce and broadcast live newscasts and other programs with only one or two operators.

The Ignite systems productivity features include Transition Macro technology, which provides event-driven control of a video switcher, audio console, cameras, graphics, and other production equipment components while delivering an improved and more consistent on-air presentation of live programming than could otherwise be accomplished with traditional hardware and studio/control room staffing.

As well, the MOS object linkage between the Ignite system and newsroom computer systems such as ENPS, Auto Cue and iNEWS allows the program producer and automation director to easily manage the production workflow by controlling each event at the page and story levels of a rundown. This flexibility allows stories to be quickly and easily floated, added, or deleted from the program rundown list.

The net result is a level of newsroom-to-control-room integration that cannot be achieved with any other approach to the process. In addition, the seamless integration of the Ignite system with the Grass Valley NewsEdit nonlinear editing system and the Grass Valley NewsQ Pro integrated news playback system improves workflows in newsrooms and control rooms.

The Grass Valley Ignite systems forward-looking platform strategy also positions broadcasters to take advantage of future system modules, including the WebSTATION video streaming product, an optional component of the Ignite system that supports Internet, interactive digital television and program distribution for 3G wireless technology for new broadcast revenue streams.
