Mixed verdict for NYC crane inspector

NYC inspector acquitted of all charges related to examination of crane in deadly collapse By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) A New York City inspector has been acquitted of all charges related to the examination of a crane later involved in a deadly collapse.

Edward Marquette was convicted of six other charges related to falsifying records of other inspections on two other dates.

A judge delivered the mixed verdict Friday.

Marquette wasn't blamed for the 2008 collapse in midtown Manhattan that killed seven people.

The tragedy helped spur both new crane safety regulations and the departure of the city buildings commissioner.

Marquette's lawyer depicted him as a scapegoat for an accident that shook the city. Prosecutors say he was a laggard exposed by the disaster.

Buildings Department records showed that Marquette had checked the crane days before the collapse, but he didn't actually conduct an inspection.
