Mister Cartoon Creates Graffiti Masterpiece at LIVESTRONG(R) Headquarters in East Austin(October 16, 2011)
AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/16/11 -- Mister Cartoon, the prolific Chicano artist, was in Austin this week creating a masterpiece on the south side of LIVESTRONG® Headquarters. He unveiled the completed mural on Friday afternoon to LIVESTRONG staff, supporters and representatives from Capital Metro including Board Vice Chairman John Langmore and Chief of Staff Gerardo Castillo. Earlier in the week, Mister Cartoon spoke to art students from Austin's Eastside Memorial High School about art, creation and community.
"My connection with LIVESTRONG is based on their service to the community and going beyond what's expected of them -- never accepting failure, letting positive energy take you to the top, stretching beyond your comfort zone," Mister Cartoon said.
"It's a real honor to have Mister Cartoon create this mural for LIVESTRONG," said Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor, champion cyclist and LIVESTRONG founder and chairman. "Like the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Cartoon is about giving back and serving community and we are grateful to him for donating his time and talent to this one-of-a-kind work of art."
Cartoon and SA Studios have been collaborating with Armstrong to create a mural that captures the LIVESTRONG spirit and serves as a work of art for the entire East Austin community to enjoy. The development and installation of the mural has been supported by Capital Metro as part of its Art in Transit initiative and commitment to incorporating public art near its facilities and transit stops. The public installation will brighten the view for MetroRail commuters, who will see the art near the Robert T. Martinez rail crossing.
"This striking mural is a real testament to what is possible when you combine the right partners around a great idea in support of a meaningful cause," said Linda S. Watson, Capital Metro president and CEO. "Capital Metro was thrilled to support this project, which will have a lasting impact along the rail line and in our neighborhood."
Cartoon's masterpiece on the exterior of the building is the perfect addition to LIVESTRONG's home, which has been part of the East Austin community since it was originally built in 1952. In 2008, Armstrong noticed the abandoned building on a bike ride and just a year later, LIVESTRONG made the facility its first permanent home after a renovation that has since garnered nine awards for environmental design.
Its innovative design, which reused or recycled 95% of the building's original materials, earned the facility a gold-rated LEED certification, making it one of the "greenest" buildings in Austin. The open floor plan encourages collaborative and creative interaction among colleagues and showcases world class art from Armstrong's private collection, as well as the famous yellow jerseys from the champion cyclist's record seven Tour de France wins. The foundation is proud to showcase world class art from Mister Cartoon on the exterior as well.
