Millions of Passengers to Benefit from New WiFi in Network Rail Stations, Powered by the Cloud- WiFi Into Seven More Stations and Nine Others Upgraded Thanks to the Cloud (April 10, 2012)
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 04/10/12 -- Millions of rail passengers are now be able to get free, high-speed internet access at Network Rail stations across the UK, thanks to an investment programme by WiFi provider The Cloud.
The Cloud's fast and reliable WiFi technology is now being installed at seven major stations, while nine others that already had WiFi are being upgraded to ensure they can handle increased demand from people who want to stream or download music and video, use Facebook and Twitter or apps, check their email or simply browse the web when they're on the go.
Most of the stations' WiFi is live now, and all will be live by the end of April. The wireless networks are available for people to use for free throughout the concourses, platforms and other public areas within the stations, though not on the trains themselves. It will help travellers get online in busy places where the 3G network is often unreliable or slow because of high demand.
The new stations getting WiFi are: Leeds, Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Glasgow Central, London Cannon Street, London Euston and London Bridge.
The stations that have had a WiFi upgrade are: Edinburgh Waverley, London Liverpool Street, London Fenchurch Street, London Charing Cross, London Waterloo, London Victoria, Gatwick Airport, London Paddington and London King's Cross.
More than 500 million passenger journeys are made across the 16 stations each year, according to Network Rail, while an estimated 4 million people every day pass through The Cloud network by visiting one of its partners, including Pizza Express, JD Wetherspoon and Caffe Nero.
These Network Rail stations are just the latest in a series of major public places to benefit from The Cloud's WiFi. In March The Cloud announced it would be installing WiFi at the 56 stations on the London Overground network from the summer, as well as in all 1,571 Greggs outlets across the country.
Vince Russell, managing director of The Cloud, said: "As Network Rail is investing in upgrading its iconic rail stations so we too are making significant investment to deliver state of the art WiFi for its customers all across the UK. Whether it's delivering real time travel info to hurrying commuters or allowing people relaxing at the station to catch up on the latest news, emails and social media, this service will enhance quality of their visit."
From mid-April millions of Sky Broadband customers will be able to enjoy free, unlimited and high-speed WiFi access at The Cloud's thousands of public hotspots right across the UK. The new service - "WiFi Hotspots from The Cloud" - will be available at no extra charge to all Sky Broadband Unlimited, Fibre Unlimited and Connect homes, offering even more great value for Sky Broadband customers.
