DALLAS, TX(via eTeligis.com)
The innovative primary source reader renowned as a powerful digital alternative to traditional texts is now available to support high school U.S. and World History courses. Used in college classrooms since 2011,Milestone Documentshas been embraced by instructors for its ability to help students engage with, analyze, and understand primary sources. The service pairs 1,600 key historical documents with expert, original commentary -- including superb, in-depth coverage of America's founding works -- from a global network of 300 historians and educators. With a price tag of just $15 per student per year, it's accessible to a wide range of schools and school districts.
"We've designed Milestone Documents as a tool for teachers to help their students build both reading and evidence-based analytical skills with nonfiction texts," said Neil Schlager, founder and president of Milestone Documents. "Our content mission to help students read and understand primary sources becomes more essential every day. It's central to the new Common Core standards, the A.P. exam, and the redesigned SAT test as well."
The new U.S. and World History content areas are each led by an Editor in Chief, who curates the document coverage and oversees the development of teacher support materials. John King (U.S. History) and Jennifer Carey (World History), both from Ransom Everglades School in Miami (FL), have developed materials that include lists of recommended documents, shorter document excerpts for key sources (providing greater flexibility), and short-answer questions aligned to the Common Core.
Milestone Documents' breadth of coverage and Web platform enable teachers to create customized document readers that suit their classrooms and their students' abilities and also provide motivated students with a rich selection of works to explore on their own. No background in the use of online resources is needed; Milestone Documents' staff works with educators to create a unique course page and helps them implement it with their classes. The staff can suggest appropriate readings based on the course or provide complete coverage of the subject so that teachers can refine their reading list as they see fit. "We can also assist teachers in aligning their selections to state and Common Core standards as applicable," said Schlager.
While it can be used as a companion to a traditional textbook, Milestone Documents is increasingly used as a stand-alone for teachers interested in eliminating expensive textbooks in favor of a primary-source-driven approach to history instruction. Further, it's designed to support the modern experience students and educators demand: students can highlight and take notes; class home pages are simple to set up; and users can access the site on any computer, smart phone, or iPad.
