Microsoft Ships Office for Mac OS X

Purchasers receive $100 off FileMaker Pro By Dave Nagel
Mac OS X just moved one step closer to the mainstream today with the release of Microsoft Office v.X. Microsoft says the new release is available today in stores nationwide. It includes OS X-native versions of Microsoft's word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, e-mail and personal information manager (PIM) programs.

According to Microsoft, the suite has been "specifically designed to take advantage of core Mac OS X technologies, including the Aqua interface, Sheets and the Quartz graphics engine, to deliver graphically compelling documents and the ease of use unique to the Mac platform." In addition to support for Mac OS X, the programs, according to Microsoft, also gain a few feature enhancements. These include:

  • a refined interface for Entourage;
  • Improved support for Internet standards for Entourage;
  • New features to help users manage e-mail and personal information in Entourage;
  • Multi-Selection and Clear Formatting in Word X;
  • AutoRecover in Excel X;
  • and Customizable Keyboard Shortcuts in Excel X, PowerPoint Packages in PowerPoint X.

Until Dec. 31, Microsoft is offering free upgrades to purchasers of Office 2001 for Mac or individual Office 2001 applications. Upgrades for other users run $299. The full release runs $499.

In addition, FileMaker is offering Office X customers a $100 rebate on the purchase of FileMaker Pro 5.5 for Mac cOS X. The rebate applies to anyone who purchased FileMaker Pro 5.5 between Nov. 1, 2001 and March 15, 2002.
