Microids uses Kaydara FiLMBOX on Road to India, Tennis Master

By John Virata
Microids Canada Inc. today announced it has been using FiLMBOX as part of its 3D character animation projects for game development. According to the company,it would take up to 75 man-months of work to realistically recreate more than 500 precise movements of a national tennis pro for its Tennis Masters video game series. Adding Kaydara's FiLMBOX into its production pipeline enabled the developer to complete its project within 15 months.

"Finding a tool that streamlines workflow and integrates well with existing tools is rare," said Stéphane Grefford, production manager at Microïds Canada. "Kaydara FiLMBOX has been a valuable asset in the production efforts of multiple titles here at Microïds, saving us a lot of time. We are thrilled with the degree to which FiLMBOX has helped to speed up our work and enable us to take our productions to the next level, both in quality and content."

In Microïds' new adventure game, Road to India, FiLMBOX was used to produce extensive full-motion video cut scenes. FiLMBOX also enabled Microïds to include interesting content that would have otherwise been difficult to create. For example, at one point the Road to India player-character must climb up and ride on the back of an elephant, and later must ride in a rickshaw, which are just two of the tricky game events made possible with help from FiLMBOX.

"The toolset available in FiLMBOX is at once intuitive and flexible," said Grefford. "It is obviously a product designed with the needs of the artist in mind. We used FiLMBOX for the Road to India, because we knew we could get the job done efficiently and ahead of schedule. It ended up being a very wise decision for us, and we will continue to use FiLMBOX in future projects."
