Michigan-Based Screen Artists Collective Taking Innovative Approach to Seek Investors for New Feature FilmsOnline Campaign to Seek Investment Funds Includes Unique Video and Attractive Incentives on www.Kickstarter.com Website (February 16, 2012)
ROYAL OAK, MI -- (Marketwire) -- 02/16/12 -- Renowned Michigan director and writer of film and stage productions Brian Lawrence and his newly named production company Screen Artists Collective are taking the plunge into previously uncharted waters as they seek finishing funds to produce their newest feature films, Rabid and Sleeping with Women, through the online website www.Kickstarter.com -- touted as "the largest funding platform in the world for creative projects."
Kickstarter.com has helped fund thousands of creative projects since it began in 2009. Artists pitch projects on the website and set a fund-raising goal to meet by a specific deadline. Contributors then donate funds, usually receiving a "thank-you" gift in return as public broadcasting has done in its fundraising for years. If the project reaches or surpasses its goal, the artist receives the funds -- minus a 5-percent Kickstarter.com commission. This will be the first time Lawrence has used the Kickstarter.com approach. Lawrence produced an energetic, attractive promotional video for the Kickstarter.com site, showcasing the actors from Rabid and Sleeping with Women. The video opens with a tongue-in-cheek scene in which actors stop in mid-sentence and find they cannot finish until they acquire needed funding. It is narrated by producer Aida Munoz; actor/singer Jeff Caponigro, who has prominent acting and singing roles in both films; associate producer Leah Ruff; producer and Director of Photography Howard Levine; and, features actors Jen Masty and Joseph Catalano.
The Kickstarter.com campaign for the Screen Artists Collective has a financial goal of $12,000 that needs to be reached during a 30-day period -- ending March 16, 2012.
"We are optimistic sufficient numbers of people will believe in our project to help us surpass the $12,000 goal -- hopefully, well beyond," said Lawrence. "We will use the funds wisely to help with production costs and to obtain the participation of a well-known actor or two."
On the Kickstarter.com site, several incentives are offered to entice investment dollars for the Screen Artists Collective and its feature films. On the low-end, a $10 contribution will earn its donor a digital-production still from the set or for $15 a download of the original soundtrack from one of the films. A higher contribution of $75 will provide a donor with a DVD or Blue-Ray copy of the finished films. And, higher-end contributions of $300 and $1,000 offer a donor with the opportunity for a lunch or Skype session with one of the cast members or a walk-on extra role in one of the films plus tickets to the premieres, respectively.
According to Lawrence, Rabid is about a decorated soldier returning to his hometown to find it in desperate economic straits and Sleeping with Women is "a film about love and other addictions."
Lawrence is considered one of the United States' top independent filmmakers, writers, directors and acting coaches. His feature films include Corrupted Minds, Politics of Street Crime and She Kills. He also is the founder and artistic director of The Actor's Workshop in Royal Oak, Mich.
