Merrill Lynch Buys GVG Kalypso Video Production Center for In-House Studio

(July 30, 2001)
The Grass Valley Group announced that Merrill Lynch has purchased a Grass Valley Kalypso Video Production Center system for use in its in-house production studio. The studio is part of Merrill Lynch MediaWorks, which produces company-related packages for distribution to more than 200 internal customers, as well as media for private clients worldwide.

Systems integrator Diversified Systems, Inc. of Kenilworth, N.J. performed the installation. Diversified Systems, Inc. is a leading integrator for broadcast, cable, business television networks, and interactive distance learning systems, offering turnkey solutions from initial concept through fabrication and installation to ongoing maintenance.

Today’s announcement is part of the transition of Merrill Lynch MediaWorks to digital production. Every day, its studios produce everything from insightful market analyses for the company’s Financial Advisors to executive addresses for worldwide internal distribution. To meet these demands, the studio configured its Kalypso system—which offers up to 80 inputs—with four mix/effects (M/E) banks, a 100-frame video still store, and an internal transform engine for digital effects.

“The flexibility and scalability of the Kalypso Video Production Center has provided Merrill Lynch with an extremely powerful production tool,” said Kevin Collins, vice president of Diversified Systems, Inc.

“The Merrill Lynch MediaWorks is a great example of the worldwide momentum behind the Kalypso Video Production Center family,” said Tim Thorsteinson, president and CEO of the Grass Valley Group. “Its adoption by high-quality content providers inside and outside the broadcast industry is a testament to both its forward-thinking design and unrivaled capabilities.”

As the hub of a teleproduction environment, the Kalypso Video Production Center family combines industry-leading switching and powerful M/E capabilities with an open, networked architecture that offers a precedent-setting degree of operational integration. With 80 inputs (video or key) it offers fingertip control of a number of previously off-board functions to streamline workflow, a 100-frame still store capability, greater M/E capabilities, and a programmable clean-feed system. All from a familiar Grass Valley interface.
The Grass Valley Group knows more about high-quality video than anybody else—especially as video goes digital. The Internet. Digital cinema. Data-enhanced broadcasting. Interactive television. It’s a world of Digicasting—one that demands Media Without Bounds™ solutions. Whether online or on the air, the Emmy® award-winning Grass Valley Group, a privately held digital media leader, has the hardware, software, and new media technologies to get content wherever it needs to go.
