Medieval is Just So... Done

The search for intelligent life in the non-ancient realm By Denise Harrison
Dating back to the times of Yserbius, Sierra's multiplayer D&D type game, MMPOGS haven't done much to change the basic themes of the games. The medieval settings are familiar to most players, perfect for those who enjoy roleplay-speak and knights in shining armor get plenty of opps to slay beasts preying on the weak.

But it's causing problems for new MMPOG developers because what is familiar may no longer be new enough, different enough, to draw their $60 purchase and $10 a month for very long.

A lot of players have their hopes in Star Wars Galaxies, however. Developed by LucasArts for Sony Online Entertainment, the game will include a number of planets, space travel vehicles, a skill-based system of advancement and is developed with a new 3D game engine. In terms of graphics, the preview screenshots look right up there with the nice graphics of Dark Age of Camelot with a comparable selection of races to play.

The characters will have an opportunity to build on land, a popular feature that was until now unique to Ultima Online. The mob spawns will be dynamic, which removes the "item camping" rub that many games suffer.
