Media Advisory: Winners Revealed In Canada's Annual Sci-Fi Film/TV AwardsDeparted Series Stargate Universe Runaway Winner at the 2012 Constellation Awards (July 10, 2012)
TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/10/12 --
Attention: Entertainment Editors
On July 6th, the TCON Promotional Society announced the winners of the sixth annual Constellation Awards, honouring excellence in science fiction film and television. The ceremonies, hosted by Toronto-born actor Robin Dunne of the science fiction series Sanctuary, were held in the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North.
Despite its cancellation in 2011 after only two seasons, the Vancouver-based series Stargate Universe proved that it is still fondly remembered by its devoted fans by taking home the award in five of the six categories in which it was nominated, including "Best Series", "Best Film Or Television Script", and "Best Female Performance in a Television Episode" for actress Ming-Na. A bittersweet moment of the night came when the show's musical composer, Joel Goldsmith, was recognized posthumously in the category of "Best Technical Accomplishment". However, in the category of "Best Male Performance", the series experienced its only loss of the night, as actors David Blue and Robert Carlyle split the vote resulting in a win for the evening's host, Robin Dunne of Sanctuary.
In the film categories, Rise of the Planet of the Apes went home with trophies for both "Best Film" and "Best Male Performance" for actor Andy Serkis. Olivia Wilde won "Best Female Performance" for Cowboys & Aliens.
This year's awards ceremonies included a special tribute to the classic 1970s Canadian science fiction series The Starlost, as two of the show's stars, Gay Rowan and Robin Ward, reunited for the first time in 39 years to present the signature award of the night, "Outstanding Canadian Contribution to Science Fiction Film and Television" - an honour which also went to the night's big winner, Stargate Universe.
The Constellation Awards are presented annually to the actors, producers, and technical teams behind the best science fiction film and television productions of the year, with a focus on Canadian contributions to the genre. Categories include "Best Actor", "Best Actress", "Best Series", "Best Film", "Best Technical Accomplishment", and the featured award, "Outstanding Canadian Contribution to Science Fiction Film or Television". All nominees and winners are determined solely through popular submission and vote.
