Fallon, one of the world's most critically acclaimed creative companies, who masterminded the short film series, tapped Bob George of Setterholm Productions, to compress the films for Internet streaming delivery. George used Media 100 solutions Media 100 i and Cleaner 5 to optimize the six to seven minute short films for the Internet.

Behind the Scenes of BMWFilms.com: How'd They Do It?!

The BMW short film series are being created for the Internet using Media 100's Media 100 i, the Company's digital media creation system for interactive streaming, and Cleaner 5, the award-winning streaming media processing solution from Media 100, to optimize and compress the films and supplementary clips. Setterholm Productions, the Minneapolis-based production agency, was selected by Fallon to stream the action-packed films for the Internet, based on the quality of streams that they were able to create using the Media 100 i and Cleaner 5. These solutions maintained the original high-quality video while compressing to the Internet in multiple formats and at multiple data rates. Cleaner 5 supported a 3:2 pull down on film footage and a 24 fps movie, enabling a crisp clean sequence by taking care of extra frames, and de-interlacing.

"We really depend on Media 100 i and Cleaner 5 to maintain as much of the original quality as possible when compressing films for the Internet," said Bob George, editor, Setterholm Productions. "Cleaner 5 has enabled us to produce pristine streaming media without the jagged edges around objects that often plague the Internet."

After the short films were produced, George received the Digibeta masters of each film and then imported them into Media 100 i using the lossless board. Once the footage was imported, the films were processed into Cleaner 5 using two different Media 100 i systems and one PowerBook G4. This process enabled high quality compressed data in a very a short time period.

The films were shot in a wide screen aspect ratio, so instead of outputting standard clips, the sequences were delivered at 800 X 340, playing on-line, as they would appear on a wide screen. For each film, George completed a total of 18 streaming segments that are available for streaming in QuickTime, Real and Windows Media formats. He also output to a full-screen QuickTime version that can be played using BMW's proprietary player that can be downloaded from the site for a truly filmic experience. Each film also has accompanying sub-plot sequences and a trailer. A `making of' program on the films and driving technique video for the vehicles are also being compressed for the site.
