Medéa Storage Solutions Feature New Hitachi Disk DrivesDeskstar 7K 500GB drives ideal for on-line and near-line content creation and video storage (September 22, 2005)
Medéa Corporation, the leading manufacturer of SATA/ATA-based RAID storage solutions, has announced that as part of its continuing campaign to further increase the performance and reliability of several SCSI- and Fibre Channel-based storage products, it will be the first company to integrate 500GB Deskstar 7K500 disk drives from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies across its entire SATA and PATA RAID product line, including the new VideoRAID XTRM4 and StreamRAID 15 arrays that feature 4-Gigabit Fibre Channel connectivity.
Medéa is a preeminent supplier of high performance RAID storage to the video post production, content creation, imaging and broadcast arenas. The Southern California-based company has developed several popular and widely used SCSI-based storage products and is also a leading proponent of the use of 4-Gigabit Fibre Channel connectivity in many of its solutions designed for Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) applications. Use of the new 500GB Hitachi disk drives will offer a variety of important benefits to users including extended drive life and increased reliability.
The Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 offers users a 25 percent capacity increase over the previous generation and double the capacity in the same space as a 250GB drive. A 2TB (terabyte) system can now be achieved with just four standard form factor ATA drives. This capacity milestone greatly enhances system reliability by reducing the number of drives needed to support the most demanding applications. The drives also feature a rotational vibration safeguard that optimizes performance in multi-drive RAID systems such as the ones offered by Medéa. Hitachis standardized features in desktop solutions enable fast transfer rates, low power utilization and quiet acoustics. The Deskstar 7K500 is the second generation Deskstar drive to enable the host system to optimize storage of data. This is achieved by Hitachis ?Smooth Stream technology which gives the host control over the drives error recovery process. This important ATA-7 standards feature fine tunes the Deskstar 7K500 to capture long audio or video data streams. The streaming feature set also possesses benefits that enable an A/V system to maximize performance of the disk drive. The Configure Stream command allows the system to tell the disk drive how many simultaneous streams will be used and if they are read or write streams. This information enables the Deskstar to optimize its buffer management.
?Medéa is a market leader in delivering the highest levels of storage quality, security and performance to its users in the broadcast, video post production and content creation arenas and as such, we are pleased to be the first to integrate 500GB drives from Hitachi across our entire Fibre Channel and SCSI product lines, states Martin Bock, President of Medéa Corporation. ?The new Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 drives are perfectly suited to the wide range of content- and image-reliant applications with which our users are involved. As the march to High Definition quickens, this drive technology ensures that video and graphics professionals are prepared to meet tomorrows broadcast and post production requirements today. The Smooth Stream feature of the new drives, combined with their extended lifespan and reliability, will integrate seamlessly with both our SCSI and Fibre Channel products, making them ideal components for our products.
The advent of 4-Gigabit Fibre Channel interface technology to eliminate throughput bottlenecks is made available in the VideoRAID XTRM4 and the StreamRAID 15. These arrays represent the latest in storage technology design, incorporating Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 SATA drive technology to maximize storage, power and cost efficiencies, and the security of triple drive protection. The VideoRAID XTRM4 and the StreamRAID 15 offer unprecedented performance at up to 800 MB/second. The arrays are designed to deliver protection and performance for broadcast and post production applications requiring the highest degree of uptime while sustaining throughput rates capable of processing two streams of uncompressed 10-bit High Definition (HD) video content with effects at frame sizes and rates up to 1080i/59.94 or up to ten uncompressed standard definition video streams simultaneously.
