Medéa Announces Compatibility with AJAs Kona 2

VideoRaid Arrays compatible with capture card from AJA Video Systems (March 22, 2005)

Medéa Corporation, the leading manufacturer of ATA-based RAID storage solutions for content creation and delivery applications, has announced the compatibility of its VideoRaid FCR2 and FCR2X Fibre Channel RAID storage arrays with the Kona 2 dual rate HD/SD capture card from AJA Video Systems, Inc. Testing of the VideoRaid FCR2 and FCR2X arrays was conducted by AJA Video Systems.

Kona 2 is an innovative capture card that supports uncompressed 8 and 10 bit SDI, HD-SDI, and dual link 4:4:4 HD at both 10 and 12 bits. Kona 2 also features 8 channel AES audio, HD/SD component analog video output, and Broadcast Quality HD/SD hardware up/down-conversion. Offering features and capabilities at unprecedented prices, Kona 2 is the highest quality and most flexible HD/SD video capture solution available for professional editing applications.

The Medéa VideoRaid FCR2 and FCR2X are the latest innovative Fibre Channel arrays optimized for a variety of high bandwidth applications, including High Definition (HD) video editing with the FCR2X. The VideoRaid FCR2 is equipped with a single channel 2-Gbit Fibre Channel interface and provides a sustained data transfer rate of 180 MB/sec., while the VideoRaid FCR2X comes with dual 2-Gbit Fibre Channel interfaces that can deliver a sustained data transfer rate of 320 MB/sec sufficient to meet the demands of all formats of HD. Both arrays support all Fibre Channel modes including loop and switched fabric, so as storage requirements grow, multiple VideoRaid FCR2 or FCR2X arrays can be scaled to capacities exceeding 120TB nearly 1,600 hours of uncompressed Standard Definition (SD) video content. These features make the Medéa Fibre Channel arrays a solid choice for video professionals using AJA Videos Kona 2 capture card.

?The Kona 2 capture card is a dynamic and powerful post production tool favored by many preeminent professional film and video editors, and we are pleased to have compatibility with the VideoRaid FCR2 and FCR2X Fibre Channel RAID storage arrays from Medéa, states Ted Schilowitz, AJA Video Product Manager for Desktop Video. ?As the HD reckoning continues to be realized in a variety of broadcast, post production and corporate video sectors, the need for powerful RAID storage is apparent. AJA Video Systems is committed to developing powerful editing solutions to meet the demands of High Definition. Medéas ability to support Kona 2 at both the SD and HD levels will provide our users with a highly scalable, reliable and secure RAID storage solution.

The VideoRaid FCR2/FCR2X features a range of specialized proprietary features developed by Medéa. These include a preventative maintenance system called RAID Patrol, which proactively monitors the disk media for errors and offers an unparalleled level of performance and protection. Safety Net adds another level of security by repairing data errors ?on the fly. For video post applications, the VideoRaid FCR2 and FCR2X both feature Medéas proprietary Multi-Stream Technology (MST), a sophisticated embedded stream handling algorithm that works in conjunction with the systems on-board caching RAID controller to support simultaneous real-time playback of multiple streams of uncompressed Standard Definition video.

Medéa has built a strong reputation for engineering innovative RAID technology into its products. The VideoRaid FCR2 and FCR2X will continue to operate at full performance and without data loss even in the event of a disk drive failure. When it does become necessary to replace a drive, users can simply hot swap out the bad drive module without having to power down the system and the array will automatically begin reconstruction of the drive in the background while the editor continues to work. The FCR2X also features redundant power supplies, providing further security against lost editing time in the event of a power failure.

?Medéa is committed to developing innovative RAID storage solutions that integrate effortlessly with editing products from leading manufacturers such as AJA Video, states Don McDonell, Senior Vice President of Medéa Corporation. ?We designed the VideoRaid FCR2 and FCR2X to support Kona 2 users around the world with a powerful and scalable RAID storage solution that delivers all the benefits of Fibre Channel connectivity and exceeds the requirements for editing both SD and HD content."
