Maya's New Pricing Kicks Off TodayAlias|Wavefront also kicks off new licensing programs
Maya is Alias|Wavefront's high-end 3D modeling, rendering and animation suite. Maya Complete drops from $7,500 to $1,999. Maya Unlimited will go for $6,999, down from $16,000.
Alias|Wavefront has been trying to expand the market for Maya for some time now, starting with the release of the Maya Shockwave exporter and Maya RTA for the Web graphics market and Maya Complete for Mac OS X in September 2001. This year the company also released a free "Personal Learning Edition" of Maya targeted toward students. Maya Personal Learning Edition, launched just five weeks ago, has had more than 100,000 registrations, according to Alias|Wavefront.
Maya Complete for Mac OS X still has not caught up to its counterparts on other platforms in terms of version number and features. Nor has Alias|Wavefront yet released Maya Unlimited for the Macintosh. So the new pricing primarily benefits users on Linux, Irix and Windows platforms. It works like this:
- Maya Complete across platforms will sell for a flat price of $1,999.
- Maya Unlimited will go for $6,999 for a node-locked license.
- Users of Maya Complete on Linux, Irix or Windows can upgrade to maya Unlimited for $1,499 (until June 28).
- Floating licenses for Maya Unlimited will be available at an additional charge.
New maintenance and upgrade offerings include pay per upgrade (version or product), free online support, single incident support and reduced cost "annual full maintenance." New licensing policies will also come into effect today which give Maya Unlimited customers with floating licenses the right to operate on any Alias|Wavefront qualified operating system at no additional charge.
The Maya Complete package includes modeling, rendering, animation, dynamics, Artisan, Paint Effects and Maya Embedded Language (MEL), an open interface for programming and scripting. Maya Unlimited 4 also includes Maya Fur, Maya Cloth and advanced modeling features. For more information, visit http://www.aliaswavefront.com.
