Maxtor Ships USB 2.0 Drive

External 40 GB drive sells for $200 By Dave Nagel
Maxtor today announced the new Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LE, a 40 GB external hard drive with a USB 2.0 interface. The USB 2.0 interface is significantly faster than the current USB 1.1. Macintosh users will need a USB 2.0 board to take advantage of the speed, although the drive is designed to be backward compatible with standard Mac USB interfaces as well. Maxtor is offering a USB 2.0 upgrade card that includes four external and one internal USB 2.0 connectors for $49.95.

The 3000LE is one of Maxtor's "value-priced" drives, a 5,400 RPM mechanism that sells for $199.95. The interface itself supports 480 megabit per second transfers, slightly faster than the current-generation FireWire interface.

The drive has a 2 MB cache buffer, a track to track seek time of 1 millisecond, a full stroke read seek of 24 milliseconds and an average latency of 5.5 milliseconds. The 3000LE requires a true Macintosh G3 or higher and Mac OS 9.0 or higher. For more information, visit
