Maxtor Intros Ultra320 SCSI Enterprise-Class Hard Disk Drives

(October 23, 2001)
Maxtor Corporation today announced its collaboration with LSI Logic Corporation to offer full interoperability between Maxtor's Atlas 10K III hard disk drives and LSI Logic's Ultra320 SCSI controllers. Enterprise computer users will now have faster, more reliable data transfer rates for optimal use in:

  • Mainline storage

  • NAS, SAN and RAID environments

  • Internet and Intranet networks

  • Streaming video and audio

"With data transfer speeds of 320 MB per second and up to 73 GB storage capacity in a 1-inch-high form factor, Atlas 10K III is the drive of choice for demanding enterprise applications," said John Joseph, vice president of marketing, Server Products Group at Maxtor. "By working with LSI Logic, we are ensuring that customers can realize increased reliability, better signal integrity and doubled data transfer speeds offered by the new Ultra320 SCSI interface."

The Atlas 10K III offers improved signal integrity from previous SCSI drives through adaptive active filtration (AAF), a Maxtor technology innovation that allows the drive to adapt to changing system configurations and components while optimizing signal quality translating into lower error rates, increased bus efficiency and improved system performance. The Atlas 10K III is also compatible with host controllers that use a pre-compensation technique to achieve signal integrity.

"The Ultra320 SCSI functionality of the Atlas 10K III has been tested and proven by LSI Logic's rigorous development and testing process," said Bill Wuertz, vice president LSI Logic's Storage Standard Product Division. "Maxtor's Atlas 10K III together with our LSI53C1030 and LSI53C1020 Ultra320 SCSI controllers will deliver the high performance benefits promised by Ultra320 SCSI interface technology such as improved playback quality of digital video."

The Ultra320 SCSI interface is backwards compatible with all versions of SCSI interfaces and is ideal for high performance applications such as streaming audio and visual applications, Internet and Intranet networks and PC workstations. The Atlas 10K III has a rotational speed of 10,000 RPM, an average seek time of 4.5 ms and industry leading 18 GB/platter density. The Atlas 10K III Ultra320 is a new-generation SCSI drive with a full implementation of the mandatory and optional Ultra320 SCSI interface features as defined in T10/SPI-4 rev 7 draft standaess, interconnect and store data, voice and video. In addition, the company supplies storage network solutions for the enterprise. LSI Logic is headquartered at 1551 McCarthy Boulevard, Milpitas, CA 95035, 866-574-5741,
