Maxtor Fusion 500GB hard drive

Access large media files from anywhere with a fast Internet connection By John Virata

With the acquisition of Maxtor by Seagate complete, the combined company now has to determine how to market their products. While Seagate and Maxtor both have external storage solutions, the footprints of these drives remain different and their usability features are, for the most part, also distinct. While Seagate has a whopping 750GB USB/FireWire drive and 500GB eSATA drive among its many offerings, Maxtor has the One Touch series among its products, as well as the new Fusion line that is different enough to put it in another class, and that is of web-enabled networked storage device.
The Maxtor Fusion is a 500GB external storage device that connects not to your computer, but rather to your broadband router, which for this review, was a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router. The device is an ideal storage solution for those who need access to media files and other files in remote locations, such as across town or even in another country. This can include digital content creators such as effects artists, video editors, and DVD creators, to artists working in ad agencies or in house art departments. The idea is to provide easy Web based access to media files that wold otherwise choke an email system.

Fusion Specs
Fusion features IEEE 802.3 and 802.U capabilities and supports Ethernet transfer speeds of up to 1000Mbps (100Mbps and 10Mbps are also supported). It weighs about 5lbs and maintains the footprint of the current generation OneTouch series of Maxtor external hard drives. It connects to the Internet via DSL or cable modem router, and also features two USB ports for future Fusion storage additions beyond the initial 500GB capacity.

Fusion enables you to upload and download digital media from the central Maxtor Fusion drive, from anywhere with an Internet connection. The only requirement is that the browser run to login either be Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 1.5 or later editions. Once you log in, you can import or export content from virtually any computer. What ties the system together and enables it to be accessed virtually anywhere in the world there is an Internet connection is the Fabrik software that acts as the interface. Fabrik enables users to access the content on the Fusion drive. It acts as the visual repository of the drive, enabling you to import or export files, as well as make them public for your selected users to see, and if needed delete files from the server.
