Maxon Updates Cinema 4D

Version 8.1 gains new particle effects, render improvements By Dave Nagel
Maxon today released an update to Cinema 4D R8, the company's flagship 3D modeling and animation package. The new R8.1 release includes maintenance fixes, as well as new effects and improvements to the Advanced Render module. It's available now for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows.

The R8.1 release updates the core Cinema 4D application, as well as optional modules. Included in the new version are new particle effects for Thinking Particles, ranging from a "Blurp," an operator that fragments an object and builds it into a new shape, to MatterWaves, which allows for particle controls using lights and textures. Other new features include:

  • Full support for high dynamic range imagery in the Advanced Render module, which supports 96-bit images;
  • Faster OpenGL;
  • The addition of 20 new nodes for the XPresso expression editor;
  • Enhancements to FLash and Shockwave output;
  • Import optimizations for NURBs models created in other applications.

Cinema 4D R8.1 is available now as a free update for users of Cinema 4D R8. The full version runs $595 for the core application; $1,695 for the XL bundle; and $2,495 for the Studio bundle. Cinema 4D supports Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows. For more information, visit
