Maxon Ships Cinema 4D R8.5

'Sketch and Toon' non-photographic renderer also released By Dave Nagel
Maxon has released a major update to Cinema 4D, the company's 3D modeling and animation suite. The new 8.5 release includes improvements throughout the basic package, as well as in the Advanced Render module. The company has also introduced a new rendering module called Sketch and Toon, a non-photographic renderer for Cinema 4D. Both are available now for Mac OS X and Windows.

New features in Cinema 4D R8.5 include a new Material Editor with customizable previews; integration of SLA shaders, SLA Baker and DirtyNuts; full access to all parameters via XPresso; and new shader features, such as a new Layer Shader with stackable material functionality, a new Ripple shader for water surface effects and a SplineShader for additional control when applying materials onto objects.

For the Advanced Render module, enhancements include Subsurface Scattering; Vector Motion Blur; ability to render post effects on a separate layer through the multipass rendering option; and the addition of Object GI rendering for reducing noise in radiosity-rendered animations.

Other new features include:

  • Importer/exporter for FBX format;
  • Enhancements to the Bones system to make them "smarter, faster, better and compatible with FBX," according to Maxon;
  • Camera Mapping for 3D compositing without texture distortion.

Maxon has also released a new rendering module for Cinema 4D called Sketch and Toon. The module allows users to render in non-photographic modes, including sketch effects and line/fill cartoon shading. It also includes several variations on these styles, such as sketch fills, cross hatch and others.

Sketch and Toon is available now for Mac OS X and Windows for $349 and requires Cinema 4D R8.5 or higher. Cinema 4D R8.5 is available now for Mac OS X and Windows. Pricing varies by configuration, but the update from version 8 to 8.5 runs $149, with special deal when purchasing both the update and the Sketch and Toon rendering module.
