Matrox Releases Beta RTMac Drivers for Mac OS X

Final Cut Pro 4 support included in first OS X release By Dave Nagel
Matrox today released beta Mac OS X drivers for its RTMac video capture and editing board. The drivers, according to the company, feature support for both Final Cut Pro 3 and Final Cut Pro 4. They're available now for free download.

Matrox has been promising a Mac OS X port of their drivers for RTMac for more than a year, though various issues, such as AV sync, prevented their release. In the meantime, the company has said since earlier this year that beta drivers did exist, but they were in the hands of a small group of private beta testers. The company did demonstrate the drivers at the NAB convention in April, though today's release is the first available for public testing. Matrox cautions that the drivers are not in final release yet and that users should not update in the middle of a project.

The new OS X drivers support up to four layers of real-time editing (two video, two graphics), including two motion effects on video or graphics layers and opacity controls on up to three layers. Recommended system requirements for the drivers include a 667 MHz G4, 512 MB RAM, a 133 MHz system bus and a combined level-2 and level-3 cache greater than 1 MB per processor.

Matrox says there are still known issues, including a two- to four-frame AV sync offset. A complete list of limitations is posted on the Matrox RTMac support forum. For more information, visit To download the beta drivers, visit
