Marshal's shooting, 3-hour manhunt shake Ind. town

Marshal's unexplained shooting, 3-hour overnight manhunt shake small Indiana community By The Associated Press

WATERLOO, Ind. (AP) ' Police in Indiana say a man and a woman knocked on a door at 3 a.m., asked for help with their car and one of them shot a deputy town marshal called to help them. Authorities say they left him bleeding from a shot to the face and fled.

A three-hour manhunt in Waterloo, Ind., north of Fort Wayne, ended Thursday near the scene of the shooting with the male suspect dead and the woman critically injured after a shootout with police.

Indiana State Police said they were still trying to piece together what sparked the shooting of Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady, who had surgery and was listed in serious condition. Sgt. Ron Galaviz wouldn't speculate on a motive, saying investigators needed to talk to Brady or the surviving woman.
