Manny Marroquin Mixes Hit Tracks with SSL ConsolesMixing engineer earns multiple Grammy nominations (February 08, 2005)
From humble beginnings in his native land of Guatemala to the hallowed halls of the music elite and three Album of the Year Grammy Award nominations, top mixing engineer Manny Marroquin epitomizes the American success story by producing hit after hit. The creative genius expressed by Marroquin is engineered through Solid State Logic consoles, culminating with the XL 9000 K Series SuperAnalogue Console.
This year, Marroquin is nominated in the Album of the Year Category for his contribution on Alicia Keys, ?The Diary of Alicia Keys; Kanye West, ?The College Dropout and Usher, ?Confessions. Collectively, the three projects have garnered 26 Grammy nominations and mark the first time a trio of urban releases has been nominated for Album of the Year. While all three projects were mixed at Larrabee Studios in Los Angeles, Marroquins home base, he also worked on an XL at The Hit Factory in New York and at Plus XXX in France on the Alicia Keys project.
Marroquin has worked in various Los Angeles studios over the years with artists such as Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Carlos Santana, Dru Hill, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Maroon 5, 2PAC, Madonna, Babyface and the first Pink album in 1997. At that point, Marroquin became one of the more popular go-to guys for mixing R&B and hip-hop releases.
?I moved around for several years and landed at Larrabee, Marroquin relates. ?Larrabee has a great reputation with engineers and I believe the best sounding rooms. Ive worked in all of Larrabees rooms, and about four years ago I opted for Larrabee Norths Studio 2 with a private lounge and patio. After working with Alicia Keys on the XL 9000 K Series, I recommended the new K Series console for Larrabees Studio 2. Larrabee just installed a second 9080K Series in Studio 1.
Marroquin appreciates the wonderful creative tools Solid State Logic has produced over the years, leading up to the XL 9000 Series. For Marroquin, all his projects are done on SSL consoles.
?I was a huge Teddy Reilly fan, since he invented that whole New Jack Swing sound, says Marroquin. ?I loved that sound even before I personally started working on SSL consoles and I found that he built his sound around the G Series compressor. I started using the compressor and it was love right from the beginning. The sound you would hear on your favorite albums was right in front of me. That was definitely when I fell in love with SSL.
When the SL 9000 J Series SuperAnalogue console hit the scene, it gave Marroquin a greater degree of depth that he couldnt coax from the 4000.
?Starting with the 9000 J, I was able to get a real low, tight bass with a high end that was just so clear, Marroquin relates. ?The J Series was just plain wider and deeper sounding and it gave me the shaping capabilities I needed to craft my mixes.
But as good as the J Series was for Marroquin, the XL became another step above for his ample creative talents.
?Im a big fan of the XL sound, explains Marroquin. ?The XL, to me, is an improvement from the 9000 J, especially in the low end. The way to describe it is through the way I compress the low-end energy with my kicks and basses. I dont have to do so much processing with the XL. I can key in using the bell curve on the EQ. I think this curve is an improvement and I can really key in on a frequency and separate it from my low end. The XL reduces the amount of outboard gear that I need to use because of its great musical sounding dynamics section. The XL delivers the clarity and tonal quality demanded by todays projects.
For Marroquin, being a successful engineer entails three traits to help artists and producers create music. He believes a good engineer takes technology out of the equation for the artist and producer allowing them to focus on creative expression.
?I think there is a combination of three different personalities that you need to have to be successful, states Marroquin. ?First, you really need to be good at what you do so you can manage the technology. Second, you need to be a people person. When you are in a room with people for 14 hours a day, you need to know how to manage a creative relationship. And third, you have to be a good businessman. To me, these three traits are the best way to bring the producers and the artists vision to fruition.
?In the end this is about creative people making emotional statements through music and bringing these statements to the world at large. Its really all about people reaching people. For me, I feel very lucky to be where I am and I feel very fortunate that I understand how to use tools like the XL 9000 K Series to help with the creative process.
