Mann Theatres Selects REAL D for Digital 3D Entertainment

Mann Theatres' Grauman's Chinese complex to host REAL D flagship theater (March 14, 2005)

Mann Theatres today announced that the company has selected REAL D as the exclusive delivery system for digital 3D entertainment for its theater chain. Mann Theatres' world-famous Grauman's Chinese Complex, located on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, Calif., will host the REAL D flagship theater, which will open to the public in May 2005.

Spurred by recent overwhelming interest from content creators coupled with continued enthusiasm from consumers for 3D entertainment, Mann Theatres is the first theater chain to embrace the exhibition of digital 3D content. The REAL D flagship theater at the Chinese complex will mark the first time the 78-year-old theater complex has been equipped to show 3D movies.

"REAL D's solution is visually stunning, cost-effective and easy to deploy," said Peter Dobson, Chief Executive Officer, Mann Theatres. "With REAL D, Mann Theatres will be well-poised to address consumers' demand for more sophisticated theatrical experiences from their local multiplex and help in the fight against piracy because of the extreme difficulty of pirates replicating 3D movies."

"3D technology has rapidly advanced in recent years, enabling REAL D to pioneer an affordable, premium solution for digital 3D exhibition for the motion picture industry that harnesses the mission-critical technology trusted by Fortune 500 companies," said Michael V. Lewis, Chairman, REAL D. "Once audiences see how much the technology has advanced, they will come to expect 3D to enhance their movie-going experiences."

REAL D will upgrade Mann Theatres with its patented technology beginning with the Mann Chinese VIP Theater. This system, based on the upcoming standard defined by the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) provides all the necessary equipment for the flawless delivery of 3D content, as well as the highest quality 2D content.

Unlike traditional 3D projection technology that is costly and cumbersome, REAL D has focused on providing a solution that allows Mann Theatres to play the highest quality stereoscopic content using a single digital projector and lightweight "sunglasses" without the costly expense of maintaining multiple projectors, unreliable shutterglasses and additional staffing.

In addition to being able to play upcoming 3D content from filmmakers such as James Cameron (Aliens of the Deep), Robert Zemeckis (Polar Express), and Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids; Shark Boy & Lava Girl), the REAL D solution allows Mann Theatres to realize additional revenue streams from the presentation of alternative programming, such as live concerts and sporting events, as well as high-impact advertising.

Mann Theatres will announce plans for the rollout of additional REAL D theaters later this year.
