Manhattan Edit Workshop and Lo-Fi Pictures Launch Groundbreaking, Public Collaboration FilmPublic Invited in to First-Ever Truly Collaborative Feature 'Out of Many' (January 19, 2010) Lo-Fi Pictures' feature length documentary "Out of Many," (www.outofmanythemovie.com) focuses on a unique group of people who attended the inauguration of Barack Obama, an event that changed American history. On February 15th, 2010 'Out of Many' breaks its own historical ground with a game-changer of a different sort. The film will be the first feature-length movie that invites and facilitates public collaboration and input into the editorial process. In association with Manhattan Edit Workshop, Lo-Fi Pictures will open the door to the public to help create the first truly "interactive" film. Josh Apter, "Out of Many" Director and MEWShop Owner notes, "'Out of Many,' will be the first movie made for the people - by the people. We are using this moment and this project to put creative power into the hands of the audience, not just the filmmaker."
The film, originally initiated by an open call to independent filmmakers and to the creative community, will screen President's Day, February 15th at 8PM EST as an "on-line rough cut" - the first screening of its kind at www.outofmanythemovie.com. A live, post-screening web chat will allow the audience to interact with the filmmakers, give their reactions and make suggestions. Selected notes will be incorporated into the film with appropriate credit given, and additional cuts of the film will be screened on a regular basis. "This project has always been an open forum for those passionate about both filmmaking and this unique moment for America." Apter says, "It is only fitting that the editing process is shared in a similar way - and we are excited to see where that incredible bit of insight might come from."
'Out of Many' tells the story of five people who traveled from around the United States with the common goal of attending the inauguration of Barack Obama. An up close view of the mass exodus and harmonious chaos leading to the Mall in Washington DC on the bitingly cold 2009 Inauguration day, the documentary takes viewers on an unforgettable trip to the heart of our nation - and the moment that changed America. The film follows five very different individuals who were compelled to attend the Inauguration for divergent reasons. Sara, an unemployed theater manager from Brooklyn; Eric, a divorced Los Angeles Firefighter; Shayla, an expatriate photographer freshly returned home from Paris; Diana, a Bronx cop, Army reservist and former Republican; and Ryan, a cyclist from Portland who crossed the country on his ten-speed in the hopes of scoring a ticket to Obama's swearing in all present moving testimony to their presence on the mall.
For Manhattan Edit Workshop, New York's top Apple , Avid and Adobe Authorized Training Center, the idea of a public rough-cut screening is a natural extension of their teaching philosophy. Jason Banke, MEWShop General Manager and "Out of Many" Editor/Co- Producer notes, "We try to teach as much of the 'why' of editing as we do the 'how' of editing. We hope this experience will initiate a discussion that makes the movie better, and gives people an insider's view of how a picture is put together."
