Macworld Conference Makes Music With Dream Studios

Mac music studios will come to life on Macworld exhibit floor. (May 27, 2004)

IDG World Expo and the Berklee College of Music today announced the Dream Studios, an interactive exhibit at Macworld Conference & Expo in Boston that will simulate state-of-the-art music studios based on the Mac. Designed and developed by Berklee faculty and students, the Dream Studios will provide attendees with an opportunity to experience the most sophisticated and innovative tools for audio production. Macworld Conference & Expo will take place July 12-14, 2004 at the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC); the exhibit floor will open on Tuesday, July 13.

The Dream Studios will showcase the latest hardware and software available to build cutting-edge music production setups. Music students, hobbyists, songwriters, cover bands and professionals will be able to take self-guided tours of the Dream Studios, participate in demonstrations and listen to presentations by Berklee faculty.

The exhibit will feature three separate studio configurations: the Dream Mobile Studio for use on the road, the Dream Entry Level Studio for use at home, and the Dream Project Studio for professional users. The Dream Studios will be held on the exhibit floor and are open to all attendees at Macworld Boston.

"The Dream Studios exhibit will give attendees a closeup look at the hardware and software used to build a Mac music-making studio," said David Mash, vice president for information technology at Berklee College of Music. "This will be a great chance to check out the gear in actual real-world use, and hear Berklee faculty and students discuss the equipment and demonstrate music projects created on these types of systems."

For music enthusiasts seeking more in-depth education on Mac-based audio production, Macworld Boston also offers a two-day Power Tools Conference, "The Macintosh Home Recording Studio for Musicians." Participants will learn how to build their own studios, as well as how to record, mix, master and market their material. Chaired by Mash, this conference is designed specifically for musicians who want to record their music and develop their audio engineering skills. Sessions in this conference include:

* Overview of the Mac Home Studio
* Core Concepts - Understanding Digital Audio and MIDI
* Getting the Sound In
* Manipulating Your Music - Part 1: MIDI Sequencing
* Manipulating Your Music Part 2: Manipulating Digital Audio
* Electronic Instruments for Analog Musicians
* Finishing Touches: Mastering Your Project
* Demo's and Q&A of Digital Audio Workstations

Berklee College of Music will also demonstrate Mac music magic at work during a live performance on the "Geeks & Gadgets" stage on the exhibit floor at Macworld Boston. The All-Mac Techno Rave Ensemble will feature Berklee music students making music with electronic, acoustic and Mac-based instruments. This performance will take place on Tuesday, July 13 at 2:30 pm.
