Mackie To Release UAD-1 3.0 Software

Company also announces new Powered Plugins for UAD-1 By Dave Nagel
Beginning tomorrow, Mackie Designs will ship version 3.0 software for its UAD-1 DSP card. The company will also release new Power Plugins for the UAD-1 and will announce a new third-party plugin for the Mackie Soundscape System. All of the announcements are being made at the NAMM convention in Anaheim, Calif., which runs Jan. 16 through 19.

The Mackie UAD-1 is a DSP card developed by Universal Audio that powers a collection of audio processors known as "Powered Plugins." According to Mackie, more than 7,000 of the cards with Powered Plugins have been sold to date. Tomorrow the company will release version 3.0 software for the card, which adds support for a new EQ plugin called Cambridge. (See below.) The software also adds support for up to four UAD-1 cards in a Windows system. Support for multiple cards on the Macintosh will not be available until the second quarter, according to the company.

Mackie is also introducing two new Powered Plugins for the UAD-1 in conjunction with Universal Audio. These include Cambridge and Dreamverb. Cambridge is a five-band, fully parametric EQ with high- and low-cut filters and a variety of filter types and curves. It also includes switchable shelving filters for each EQ band.

Dreamverb is a combinations of a reverb plugin and five-band active EQ that offers level ramping for early and late sound reflection. It allows users to create an acoustic space from a list of different materials and room shapes. These acoustic spaces can be customized by morphing different room shapes and surface materials, adjusting the effect of the room materials on the sound space and varying the density of the air to simulate different ambient situations.

Cambridge will be available in the second quarter for $89 for registered UAD-1 or $149 for unregistered users. Dreamverb will be available as a free download for UAD-1 users from the Mackie and Universal Audio Web sites beginning in the second quarter.

In separate news, Mackie has also announced a new third-party plugin for Soundscape 32. Sounscape 32 is an embedded digital audio workstation. The new plugin is called Saturated Fat and comes from Acuma Labs. It's designed to reproduce tube distortion and natural cabinet modeling and will be available tomorrow for $199.
