Detailed 'making ofs' are written by winning CG Challenge artists in both 2D and 3D categories:
- Krishnamurti M. Costa
- Daryl Mandryk
- Greg Petchkovsky
- Jeff Rey
- Ila Soleimani
- Damian Bajowski
- Bernado Delgado
- Francis Tsai
CG Challenge XV - Machineflesh Combining two popular themes (characters and machines), CG Challenge contestants were tasked to create an image depicting a mechanically altered or enhanced organic lifeform. This fifteenth challenge run by CGNetworks received over 1400 entries in the 3D category and over 700 2D entries, making it almost twice the size of any previous challenge, and setting the record as the largest online art contest ever!
"With the incredible quality and quantity of artwork emerging from our community through the CG Challenges, it was a logical step to document the outstanding efforts of the Challengers in print," comments Leonard Teo, Managing Director of Ballistic Media. "Despite running 14 Challenges prior to Machineflesh, much of the artwork contributed has been lost due to the temporal nature of the Web. These new CG Challenge books serve to document the contests so that future generations of artists can be inspired and learn."
CG Challenges CG Challenges are the largest online art contests of their kind, with huge amounts of sponsorship and publicity for each Challenge. Working within guidelines and software limitations, artists are challenged to create outstanding artworks based upon set themes while showing their work-in-progress to the community.
CG Challenges are unique in that there is no charge to enter and contestants are encouraged to post their work "in progress" for appraisal by the community. For the Machineflesh Challenge, a prestigious group of sponsors including Boxx Technologies, Wacom, NVIDIA, Discreet, The Gnomon Workshop and Ballistic Publishing provided prizes to the value of over $25,000, setting the scene for an online event that rapidly became the largest in the world.
