MOTU Announces FireWire Audio Interface

Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) has announced a new model in its lineup of hardware audio interfaces--the 828mkII. The new model is a FireWire-based interface for Macintosh and Windows, replacing the older 828 model at the same price point and with several additional features. It's expected to ship by the end of next month.

The 828mkII is a single rack-space FireWire audio interface that includes 20 simultaneous inputs and 22 simultaneous outputs. It offers 24-bit, 96 kHz operation; eight-bus monitor mixing with front panel LCD programming; stand-alone operation; frontpanel mic, guitar and instrument inputs with preamps and sends; SMPTE time code sync and MIDI input and output. Additional features include:

  • Individually switchable +4/-10 reference levels on input;
  • Two mic inputs with preamps and phantom power;
  • Eight channels of 24-bit ADAT digital I/O;
  • 24-bit, 96 kHz S/PDIF digital I/O;
  • CueMix DSP monitor mixing with zero latency;
  • ADAT sync input;
  • Word clock input/output;
  • Punch I/O;
  • Two FireWire connectors for daisychaining.

MOTU saus the 828mkII is compatible with "virtually all" software on Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows. It will ship with the AudioDesk workstation suite for Mac OS, which offers 24-bit recording and editing capabilities and 32-bit mixing, processing and mastering.
