Los Angeles child's death probed in drowning caseOrgans harvested from Los Angeles child whose mother faces criminal charges in drowning case
LOS ANGELES (AP) ' Coroner's officials were investigating the death of a 5-year-old girl whose mother is accused of drowning her sister and trying to kill her, authorities said Thursday.
Marian Taque Valle was declared brain dead on Sunday. She was removed from life support and her organs were harvested on Wednesday. An autopsy was planned.
Her death is being investigated as a homicide, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Larry Deitz said.
The girls' father, Jose Humberto Lopez, told police that he returned from a store on Feb. 15 and discovered his wife trying to drown the girls in a tub. Firefighters answering a 911 call found the girls unconscious and not breathing in a converted garage behind a main house.
The younger girl died a few hours later.
Lorna Valle, 32, is charged with killing the 1-year-old and remained jailed Thursday. She could face additional charges now that the other girl has died.
Acquaintances said she had been struggling with depression.
If convicted, Valle faces 50 years to life in prison.
