London’s Premises Studios Goes Large On Mackie PA GearInstalls Mackie PA systems and Mackie CFX20 desks in 8 rehearsal studios (January 04, 2005)
The Premises Studios, a large recording and rehearsal complex in East London, has undergone a major re-fit in recent months culminating in the opening of a brand new building next door to its existing facilities.
As part of this re-fit, the complex has invested heavily in new equipment, installing Mackie PA systems and Mackie CFX20 desks in each of its eight main rehearsal studios. The systems comprise a mixture of SA1232, SWA1801 and SRM450 speakers, with either Mackie SRM350s or SRM40s as floor monitors.
Established over 20 years ago, The Premises Studios has built a strong reputation as one of London’s premier recording and rehearsal venues. Over the years it has hosted sessions for many well-known artists including Blur, Phil Collins, David Gray, Nina Simone, Jamie Cullum, Suede, Carleen Anderson and Badly Drawn Boy.
Commenting on the choice of Mackie PA equipment, Viv Broughton, owner of The Premises Studios, says: “We designed the new rehearsal rooms to meet the exacting demands of our regular artists, who need comfortable spacious studios coupled with the best sound systems available. Beyond that, we looked for PA systems that not only sounded amazing but were also simple to run and completely rock-solid reliable. We auditioned a lot of different systems but the Mackie active range beat everything else hands-down. We’ve chosen the SA1232’s plus 1801 subs in most rooms with CFX20 desks and either 350’s or 450’s as floor monitors. They’re in use 13 hours a day, seven days a week. They sound just as good with Jamie Cullum as they do with The Scissor Sisters and they never let us down. I can’t ask for more than that from a PA rig.”
Based on the borders of Shoreditch and Hackney, The Premises Studios has two recording studios, eight rehearsal studios and a further 12 rehearsal rooms that are occupied on a long-let basis by various bands. The rehearsal studios all feature air conditioning and natural light, while the two recording studios include a state of the art 24/32 track facility that is ideal for live work and a Pro Tools Studio that is aimed at artists who want to record, mix, edit and master in the digital domain.
The new three-storey building that houses most of the studio facilities cost more than £1.5 million to build and was officially opened in 2004. At present it is 80% occupied, with the few remaining studios in the old building due to move across during 2005. The complex also has an impressive restaurant, The Premises Café, which is open to both studio users and members of the public.
