Local Artist Scott Grove Wins American Institute of Architecture Napkin Sketch AwardOutside-the-Box Creativity Recognized (November 03, 2011)
ROCHESTER, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 11/03/11 -- Rochester artist and sculptor Scott Grove once again proves his creative genius by winning a unique award from the American Institute of Architecture's (AIA) Napkin Sketch Competition. Grove's entry, entitled Country Church, is featured in this month's issue of Architectural Record Magazine. In fact, Grove's submission was so unusual, the publication created a new award in recognition of it.
The rules of the contest were to submit sketches on a 5-inch square cocktail napkin; over 1200 sketches were juried by Architectural Record editors. Grove submitted five napkin sketches; the one that caught the jury's eye was of a three-dimensional church, folded up in an origami-like form and glued into a three-dimensional structure. The church was inspired by the Wheaton Community Church on East River Road, one that Scott often passes.
"No one said that the napkin had to be flat," Grove remarked. "I was hoping it would catch their attention. Now I want to know how they are going to frame it for display!"
The article reads: "... [Architectural] Record's jury stuck by the rules -- with one exception: a tiny, delicate model of a church by Scott Grove (an artist) in which the cocktail napkin was made to act like balsa wood. Record created a 'hors de concour' (out of the running) award. We couldn't resist it."
