Lobitos Creek Ranch Publishes WebDVDs for Yoga JournalUnique features combined with media-rich ROM and Internet content (December 09, 2004)
Applying DVD design creativity with media-rich ROM and Internet content, Lobitos Creek Ranch has published two WebDVD projects for Yoga Journal, Yoga for Your Pregnancy: Your Guide to Prenatal Fitness & A Healthy Birth (in conjunction with Lamaze) and Step By Step: The Total Guide to Managing Stress.
Both projects incorporate unique production angles that enhance the look and feel of the DVDs. Filming was done in 24P using the Panasonic SDX-900 camera. The SDX-900 offers the choice between shooting at standard television 4X3 definition or employing the cameras native chip-set that provides 16X9 widescreen SD. Using the 16X9 format, an electronic cinema look was achieved with all the sophisticated gamma and black stretch adjustments that are usually found in HD movie production. Recording was done in the 4:2:2 DVDPro-50 format. Uncompressed editing was completed in Final Cut Pro HD. The result was an extremely high quality image prior to DVD MPEG 2 encoding.
?Personal subjects such as pregnancy and stress management really require the warm, colorful, emotional feel that 35mm film provides, said Steve Michelson, Lobitos Creek Ranch studio head. ?However, 35mm (as well as HD) is just generally too costly for DVD publishing. By combining 24P, a 40th of a second shutter speed (the same speed as 35mm) and the electronic cinema look, we were able to go well beyond the normal video latitude. This project set a new standard of excellence for us in a price range that hasn't previously permitted this level of quality.
The Yoga for Your Pregnancy DVD has a valuable feature that lets viewers select yoga segments from 15 minutes to a one-hour practice. Using an HTML index page, also resident on the DVD-ROM, viewers can access web content and the ROM content. The DVD-ROM provides important articles in .pdf format and web links from Lamaze and Yoga Journal to expand the users understanding. No downloading is required since all the content is resident on the disc.
?We like to create a seamless experience for the user by making the HTML on the disc match the website. The website can offer the updated material and since the viewer uses their browser to view everything they often cant tell whether they are on the disc or whether they are surfing the Web. Its just that surfing on the disc is so much faster, said Michelson.
?Unique to the Step by Step DVD is the scripted program we designed, said Michelson. ?This feature allows the user to use the DVD as a timer during Yoga practices. A user can set the video for a selected period of time while meditating. During the meditation exercise, he or she can extend the time meditating simply by pressing a button on the remote control and choosing the time for the DVD to resume play. This sounds like a simple thing, but it is in fact a very sophisticated feature. No one else is doing it.
The Step by Step Yoga Journal DVD contains a second soundtrack intended for ?extended use. The thinking is that after a user of the DVD has learned the basic techniques taught they arent going to want to hear the same thing over and over again.
The second track contains some inspirational coaching from Yoga instructor Baxter Bell and assumes that users are continuing to view the DVD along with their practice.
According to Michelson, consumers are the beneficiaries when it comes to WebDVD published products. ?WebDVDs provide exceptional creative versatility. They can effectively and efficiently deliver the maximum educational content and entertainment.
