Linden Lab(R), creator of Second Life(R), today announced the availability of its first visual and performing arts fellowship to support creative innovation in Second Life. The fellowship, to be awarded in April, 2006, will provide one individual with a $4,000 grant to explore the potential of Second Life as a creative medium. For eligibility information and application details, please visit www.secondlife.com/education.
The virtual world of Second Life, distinguished by its open environment that encourages creative expression, currently has a population of over 125,000 residents from across the globe. It is the only virtual community that grants its residents full ownership of intellectual property.
"By nature of its unlimited potential, Second Life has already attracted a large community of creative individuals from a wide range of disciplines," said Philip Rosedale, CEO of Linden Lab. "By creating the Linden Lab Fellowship, we hope that we will encourage students of the expressive arts to explore the potential of the virtual world, for the benefit of both the Second Life culture and the broader world of art."
The Linden Lab fellowship is open to an undergraduate or graduate student in the visual or performing arts who has demonstrated through his or her work a commitment to and talent for innovation through digital media. The project funded by the fellowship must be completed within a semester, make use of Second Life tool-set and capabilities and be available for view or exhibit within Second Life.
