"Lightning DVD is Open for BusinessLightning Media opens Valencia facility for DVD replication & storage (August 05, 2004)
Lightning Media is answering client needs for high volume DVD replication by expanding to a new 13,000 square-foot facility engineered to provide high-volume DVD manufacturing as well as long-term vault storage for video tape assets. The facility, located in an industrial section of Valencia, CA. is opening its doors with the projected capability of producing 1,250,000 replicated units per month.
"This is a natural progression for Lightning Media," states CEO, Stephen Buchsbaum, who joined the facility with the express purpose of expanding its DVD replication and multimedia services. "Our core business has been growing, clients are moving from videotape to DVD and digital media, and we were in need of more space. We've just purchased two Singulus DVD lines, and with this expansion, will now provide the additional services of printing and packaging. Also, product fulfillment will be available.
Replication differs from duplication in that it is truly a manufacturing process. The actual manufacturing process of replication ensures consistency in the final product. By comparison, depending on a number of variables including the stock used and the record and playback sources, recorded (or burned) discs are open to a variety of interchange problems and thus, the disc may not play back properly in just any machine. Replicated discs average above 99% compatibility; which is why you can buy a disc off the store shelf and it will play back in essentially any machine.
"When it comes to making large numbers of DVD, there's not even a choice to be made between replication and duplication, explains Jonnie Stewart, Director of Marketing and Special Projects, ?A substantial cost-effectiveness accompanies replication. For instance, a client may only require 200 - 300 discs. While our minimum order for replication is 1,000 units, when you do the math, it may actually be cheaper to replicate the 1,000 versus burning the 300.
?There are a wide variety of replication clients out there beyond the entertainment community, continues Stewart, including labor unions, educational product developers, political campaigns -- even the general consumer who's planning a wedding for 300 guests and wants a little DVD with their baby pictures, engagement party ,etc.
While virtually any client can benefit from the speed, quality and affordability of the replication process, Lightning Media services a number of corporate clients whose marketing strategies require DVD orders ranging in the multiple thousands; as in a large order just delivered for Princess Cruises. On the entertainment side, the recent EMMY nominations prompted DVD inserts for the industry trade publications Variety and The Hollywood Reporter as well as for EMMY Magazine.
"All our services combined, provide a significant value to our clients," remarks Buchsbaum, "The convenience of the multi-media department, managing the authoring and encoding and now the added benefit of being able to obtain large orders of replications, radically streamlines the delivery process and that is one of our main objectives. We won't be going after the mass-production motion picture studio market initially. We intend to focus on the smaller projects; orders of 2,000 - 100,000 with quick turnarounds which has always been the long-held Lightning Dubbs/Lightning Media philosophy. We have some proven methods of turn-around that help facilitate this goal and by integrating additional features of packaging, labeling and eventually fulfillment, we believe we will provide a one-stop-shop to our customer base."
The average Lightning Media DVD order is 1 - 5,000 units with an average turn-around time of five to seven working days. The facility's goal is to decrease the turn-around time to a four-day delivery. Stewart concludes, ? The standard turnaround for the replication industry is 7-10 business days. We are setting a new standard because we know that though not all clients, particularly those manufacturing for the general consumer, are concerned with turn-around time; our corporate and entertainment clients have strict deadlines to meet. The most important factor driving this new facility is really the understanding of why these projects need to happen faster, coupled with the Lightning Media philosophy of getting things out as quickly as possible without compromising quality.
Lightning DVD is located at 27520 Avenue Mentry, Valencia, CA 91355.
