LightWork Design Intros LightWorks Sketch Rendering Engine

(November 29, 2001)
LightWork Design today announced the launch of LightWorks Sketch, a rendering product that creates impressionistic and stylized design renderings.

LightWorks has previously been renowned for providing photorealistic rendering solutions. LightWorks Sketch marks the product's move into the realm of non-photorealism.

Non-Photorealistic Rendering
The new LightWorks Sketch rendering product is a unique technology that allows application developers to provide their customers with the ability to instantly create impressionistic and stylised design renderings. Working directly from the 3D model, LightWorks Sketch enables non-photorealistic and hand-drawn images to be created at any stage of the design process.

A wide selection of sketch style shaders is available within LightWorks Sketch, ranging from pencil sketches to watercolour paintings. This means that designers can create many different design impressions for presentation to their customers. LightWorks Sketch is 3D-based therefore sketch images can very quickly be re-rendered from any viewpoint, without having to use other tools. The drag-and-drop user-interface allows the rapid addition of easy-to-use sketch rendering to any application.

Woll Newall, LightWorks Product Manager, commented, "Our research suggests that many people feel reluctant to make comments about a design which has hard and definite lines because it tends to look too finished. However, if the lines are drawn in a sketchy style, they are more likely to discuss the design and how it might be changed to suit them. LightWorks Sketch provides designers with the unique opportunity to create designs in the way that their customers prefer."

LightWorks Sketch also supports output of EPix files for use in the Piranesi application from Informatix Software International. Martin McGarry, Managing Director of Informatix Software International, commented, "Informatix Software International and LightWork Design have a long history of technical innovation and collaboration, and we are delighted that they have chosen to support the Piranesi EPix format in their LightWorks Sketch rendering product. The combination of LightWorks Sketch and Piranesi offers users a rich range of workflows and effects for producing 2D images from 3D models."
