Leitch Provides ICE to Brazil's Bandeirantes de TelevisãoIntegrated Content Environment aids Olympic coverage (August 13, 2004)
Leitch Technology Corporation today announced that it has been selected to provide a fully integrated NEXIO NewsNet newsroom solution to Rede Bandeirantes de Televisão, one of the leading broadcasters in Brazil, for use during its coverage of the 2004 Athens Summer Games in Athens, Greece. Upon conclusion of the Athens Games, the Leitch system will be returned to Brazil, and along with additional Leitch equipment, be installed in Bandeirantes de Televisão's network news operation to create the streamlined workflow of a fully Integrated Content Environment.
"We have had prior experience with Leitch equipment, particularly the server systems, in previous years and have seen firsthand the superior level of functionality the Leitch portfolio has provided our 24-hour news operation," said Jose Carlos da Silveira Jr., director of engineering, Bandeirantes de Televisão. "Leitch offers a fast, flexible solution, allowing us to adapt quickly to the diverse and demanding production scenarios that are common in a news environment."
The Leitch NEXIO NewsNet system to be used at the Athens Games includes two NEXIO transmission servers with eight channels and three NewsFlash FX editing systems all connected to a shared storage system. This provides the ability to ingest, edit and air material without ever transferring content. Rounding out the system are eight DPS-575 Digital Processing Synchronizers; a 64x64S4 serial digital Integrator router with a host of remote control panels; two SuiteView multi-source display processors; a reference signal generator; and 6800+ modular interface conversion and distribution amplifier modules.
While covering the Athens Games, Bandeirantes de Televisão will record 15 hours a day and receive and record eight feeds from the International Broadcast Center. Sixty percent of the feed will be recorded live and forty percent will be pre-recorded edited content.
The complete Leitch system that will form Bandeirantes de Televisão's network news operation in Brazil will include the equipment used in Athens along with the following: an additional five NEXIO shared storage transmission servers with an additional 20 channels; an additional five NewsFlash FX editing systems; NewsFlash Preditor low-resolution browse and edit solution, with a total of 30 client stations; Ingest Control Manager, which streamlines acquisition; Rundown Manager, Leitch's MOS-enabled gateway and play to air system; and InstantOnline, the journalist's link between the online server system and the proxy editing environment. The system will feature 1.4TB of storage in a mirrored configuration. The Brazil news facility will also feature an additional 45 DPS-575 Digital Processing Synchronizers; 190 additional 6800+ series modules, including SDI and analog video DAs, conversion modules and ICE6800+ modules for remote control/monitoring; and seven VelocityQ non-linear editing systems.
The sale was facilitated by Leitch's dealer in Brazil, Brasvideo. Said Wagner Mancz, director of Brasvideo, "With this installation, we are confident we accomplished our goal of finding the best solution to meet Bandeirantes de Televisão's operational and technical requirements, both for their coverage of the Athens Games and at their São Paulo newsroom facility."
"We are pleased at the high level of confidence Bandeirantes de Televisão has placed in Leitch and our ability to provide a complete, integrated system to meet their complex needs, especially during a high-profile event like the Athens Games," said Tim Thorsteinson, Leitch president and chief executive officer. "Leitch's NewsNet newsroom solution offers unique advantages in newsroom operational workflow, and we are confident Bandeirantes de Televisão's Athens Games' coverage and their Brazil news facility will realize tremendous benefits from the streamlined workflow of a fully Integrated Content Environment."
