Legendary Air Studios Orders Neve 88R and Libra Consoles(October 15, 2001)
The 96-channel 88R will be the largest new Neve analog console delivered to date, and is destined for The Hall, which has previously been graced by orchestras and artists from around the world. The Hall will be refurbished in time for the console's arrival later this year, creating more space in the control room area and a larger client area.
The 88R is ideal for Air's requirements, as Technical Manager Tim Vine-Lott explains: "We hope to maintain and expand our current client base for film scoring and classical recording by providing the latest state-of-the-art technology. The Neve 88R is flexible enough to cope with our clients' most exacting demands."
He continues: "The new Neve 88R sounds fantastic and the control surface is familiar enough not to not scare anyone, yet the functionality is a significant improvement on the VR. When we auditioned the channel strips, all of our staff and engineers agreed they were excellent, and they never agree on anything!"
Air's 88R will be fitted with 47 remote mic amps modeled on the mic amps, originally designed by Rupert Neve.
Following an intense selection process, Air Studios has also chosen an AMS Neve Libra digital mixing console. The console will work alongside Air's Classic Neve console in Studio 1. Air tested a number of consoles to see which could manage the job and the Libra won hands down. Vine-Lott explains: "In order to work in 5.1 and provide extra inputs, the most practical solution is to add a digital console with an assignable control surface. We chose the Libra because it sounds great and the control surface is so compact. We hope that by incorporating the Libra with the Classic Neve we can increase the flexibility of Studio 1 without compromising the integrity of a truly wonderful desk."
"Studio 1 has always been a popular choice for the recording and mixing of bands. With the addition of the Libra, we hope to attract a greater variety of clients and make the mixing process of larger, more complex projects an easier process."
The 88R analog console and the Libra digital console both feature AMS Neve's highly developed Encore automation system. Encore represents a significant step forward in music console automation and enables projects and operators to move easily between studios. Operators benefit from the simplicity of using a single automation system across a wide range of consoles, while Encore mix data interchange enables projects to be moved seamlessly between analog and digital consoles.
