Learn it, log it, love it: Zero click GP appraisal evidence gathering from Osmosis

  (February 01, 2013)

(PRWEB UK) 1 February 2013

Osmosis has been created to help GPs present their evidence of the research, learning and development they have undertaken throughout the year for their annual GP appraisal.

The software automatically collates any online research undertaken by a GP in one easily accessible location which can then be shared with an appraiser.

Once installed, Osmosis acts as an overarching learning tracker and automatically logs visits to multiple websites without the user having to remember to click, copy or save as a bookmark. The software is pre-loaded with a group of websites identified by the companys appraisal experts, including sites such as GP Update, GP Notebook, BMJ Learning, Nice, Clinical Knowledge Summaries, DermNET and The Cochrane Collaboration. In addition the user can easily add their own preferred sites to this list.

Dr. Simon OHara a GP trainer for 14 years and an appraiser for nine who came up with the idea for the product states I enjoy appraising, but not preparing for my own appraisal. While struggling to get my documents together, I realized how little valuable online research is actually recorded. I wanted an easy way to capture all that learning and the result is something that saves both time and effort. It is truly fit and forget software: just use the web as you normally would and each time you use one of your research websites, Osmosis notes the pages you've visited. All your data is safely stored in the 'cloud' (our secure online servers).

Essentially it is capturing what would otherwise be lost. As you research the information builds up into your own personal wiki. I use it all the time, often to look up things Ive seen before and want to refer back to.

Its particularly useful for less common conditions that you dont see every day. Having everything in one place means you can reference easily.

The share feature in the journal is a great way of sharing practice and, for example, recording notes from a practice meeting which, because of the pressures in the working day, you dont make a note of. If one person is allocated to make a record everyone will get a report that is shared."

There is also an Osmosis app (available on iPhone, iPad & Android) which allows the user to make notes whilst out at conferences, lectures and other learning settings, and also allows them to attach images that can be saved on their Osmosis journal account.

Dr Simon OHara said: Osmosis eliminates the time-consuming process of gathering this evidence and allows the GP to focus on their day-to-day activities, while also having the opportunity to build a really useful portfolio of research which can be easily referenced."

At the end of the year the Osmosis user (or at any time) logs in to their account to simply print off a report in PDF format to show evidence of all their learning activity.

The software, which is already being used by GPs nationwide, costs just £24.99 for a years licence.

"I used Osmosis today to generate my report for my appraisal - it made me very happy! Very easy - even for an IT no-hoper like me!" Dr Sue Nelson, Associate Medical Director, NHS Leeds
