Leading Mexican Broadcaster Integrates Omneon Server

Canal 22 transitions to tapeless operations with Omneon Spectrum Server system (May 10, 2005)

Omneon Video Networks today announced that Television Metropolitana Canal 22, one of Mexico's premier networks for news, movies, and documentaries, has integrated an Omneon Spectrum media server system into its Mexico City facility for commercial, promo, network ID, and program playout. In addition to providing a foundation for tapeless operations, the new server system allows Canal 22 to streamline its master control timing workflow, enhance the quality of its on-air signal, and improve interaction between playout and the network's storage, traffic, continuity, and editing departments.

"We integrated the Omneon Spectrum technology into our facility because its RAID storage module ensures high reliability and allows drive replacement while the system is online and without the risk of data loss," said Canal 22 Transmissions Director Enrique Hidalgo. "The Omneon server system guarantees a high level of file security and stability for each system component. Its flexibility allows us to change our I/O configuration at any time, according to particular Channel 22 requirements, without disrupting operations or requiring a system reboot."

Designed for the professional television industry, the Omneon server is exceptionally cost-effective and flexible, providing Canal 22 with a reliable and scalable infrastructure that will simplify the transition to a tapeless environment. It interfaces with NVerzion automation to control Canal 22's current on-air channels, Channel 22 National and Channel 22 International.

The Omneon server system installed at Canal 22 features a storage capacity of 2 terabytes, or 139 hours of MPEG-2 playout at 25 Mbps. The server's open architecture allows it to support a broad variety of third-party applications for control and transmission, media management, archiving, and collaborative production. As a result, Canal 22 is able to export final programs and promotion spots from Apple's Final Cut Pro and Leitch VelocityQ editing stations to the Omneon Spectrum system.

"The Omneon server system meets key broadcast criteria including redundancy, system stability, easy expansion capability, and smooth integration with our editing systems," added Canal 22 Master Control Chief Engineer Oscar Franco. "Furthermore, we've found system operation to be easy and user-friendly."

Systems integrator AMTEC assisted in the server installation, managing final integration and coordinating installation, commissioning, and training. AMTEC also will coordinate technical support and consult with Television Metropolitana Canal 22 as the network looks to build on the Omneon server in a further expansion of tapeless operations.
