Law allows oversized lobsters to be processed

New law takes effect allowing oversized lobsters to be processed in Maine By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ' Maine lobster companies are now allowed to process out-of-state lobsters that are larger than the size limits imposed on the state's fishermen.

New regulations became effective Tuesday allowing processors to turn oversized lobsters into meat and tail products.

Shucks Maine Lobster company owner John Hathaway said under the old law, processors couldn't find markets for the oversized lobsters, resulting in losses.

Hathaway says most of oversized lobsters come from Canada, where dealers send large shipments of ungraded lobsters to Maine processors in winter and spring.

Maine lobstermen opposed the law when it was passed in the Legislature five months ago. They think processors should abide by the same restrictions under which they operate.
