PITTSBURGH (AP) ' A former steel executive turned philanthropist who has already pledged gifts totaling $390 million to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University has given millions more to The Pittsburgh Foundation.
The estate of William Dietrich II is giving $18.1 million to meet charitable needs in the city and the northwestern Pennsylvania towns of Greenville and Conneaut (KAW'-nee-aht) Lake. Dietrich died Oct. 6.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/pnMOGW) reports Tuesday that Dietrich once served on the charity's investment committee.
He had previously given $265 million to Carnegie Mellon and $125 million to the University of Pittsburgh. Dietrich also gave $12.5 million to endow scholarships at Duquesne University.
Dietrich was born in Pittsburgh and grew a family business into the nation's largest manufacturer of light metal construction framing.
