Last Comic Standing Keeps Admusic On Its Toes

Composers complete 20-30 minutes of music for each 43:20 installment (August 09, 2004)

?Last Comic Standing 2, NBCs Emmy-nominated reality show, is Admusics latest TV project and a runaway hit of the summer. Consistently ranking in the top 20 among the advertiser-coveted-18-49 age group, the how has now been picked up by NBC for a third season. Admusic partners/composers Steve Hampton and John Adair are no strangers to scoring for television: their many credits include ?The Big House (ABC), ?Naked (BRAVO), ?My Big Fat Greek Life (CBS), Greg The Bunny (FOX), and the entire run of NBCs hit sitcom ?Just Shoot Me.

The Show
"Last Comic Standing" is hosted and executive produced by actor/comedian Jay Mohr ("Jerry Maguire"), who opens each show with two minutes of standup. In its second season, the series will again provide a new spin on reality television as it features the nationwide talent search for professional and non-professional comedians (both male and female). Once the selection process is narrowed to 10, after the final rounds of the national search held in New York and Las Vegas, the program will then follow the comedians as they live together in a house and participate in unusual and hilarious comedic competitions for the ultimate prize an exclusive talent contract with NBC. When five comics are left standing, the show becomes interactive and home viewers make the final decision.

The Music
Unlike a standard sitcom, which features four minutes of music on a heavily scored episode, the composers latest challenge ups the ante considerably: ?Last Comic Standing 2 boasts an astounding 20-30 minutes of music for each 43:20 installment. The composers have written in a host of diverse styles for the show, including lush Sinatra orchestrals, Bluegrass, Spy music, 70's funk, hard punk, hard hip hop, polka, porn music, new age meditation music, bar rock music and even Tango. The wide range of music is needed to punch up each new and surprising situation. The music also creates an audio branding signature for the show.

Adair noted that reality based programs are more challenging to score than scripted shows because the music has to play a much heavier and specific role. ?The music works harder because you don't have the writing to tell the story, flesh out the characters, articulate transitions, create the tension and keep the momentum, he said. As Hampton pointed out, ?In reality shows, the story is built in the editorial process. The composers added that the audience counts on music to define the character of the contestants, amplifying the idiosyncrysies of their personalities and separating the heroes from the villains.

Additional scoring for the series has been done by Ryan Elder and Paul Bessenbacher, also of Admusic. The company provided all music production, recording, editing, and mixing on ?Last Comic Standing.

This is Adair and Hamptons second season on the show. ?As the producers retooled the look of the show for the second season, we honed in on a tighter, more consistent sound, said music producer Brad Hamilton. Originally, the plan was to shoot fourteen hours (12 episodes) of the show. Due to the shows success, the network recently added additional episodes. The final episode will air live in early August at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA.
